Day 7 Linz - Mitterkirchen - Baumgartenberg - Klam - Grein - Linz

Austrian Danube

(in 36 km) Mitterkirchen: On the previous day we would have had to do the stretch Linz-Mitterkirchen, but we made the route driving with the car to visit Mauthausen. We decided to restart the bike path from the Celtic village of Mitterkirchen, which we will not enter, but we saw from outside. It is an outdoor museum with the reconstruction of a Celtic settlement from the years (800-450 BC).

(in 4 km) Baumgartenberg: The Cistercian Abbey of Baumgartenberg, converted in convent, was founded 6 May 1141 by Otto von Machland. In 1243, the abbey church, built in the late Romanesque style, was consecrated. In 1426 and 1432 the church and the abbey were looted by the Hussites. Its reconstruction began in 1434 in a late Gothic style. The abbot Bernhard Breil, who leads the abbey in the second half of seventeenth century, asked the architect Carlo Antonio Carlone to introduce the Baroque style. In the interior highlights carved wooden stalls and the organ.

(in 4 km) Klam: We started to move towards Klam, but at the exit of Baumgartenberg we found a stretch of about two kilometers quite sloped. With the aim of not to tire the girls, we made this short stretch by car, until the parking of the Klam Castle. This castle, founded in 1149, is one of the best preserved in Austria. After making a brief stop near its walls, we continued the march down to Grein. In this section we must take extreme care because we are moving through the Klamer Straße road, something busy without margin nor bicycle lane.

(in 8 km) Grein: We entered this city with bicycles until Stadtplatz, the beautiful square which is the Stadttheather, a small theater of 167 seats built in 1791, in place of the old barn Town Hall. We came to the bank of the Danube, where is a ice cream parlor which has the fame of to have the best ice creams in the whole region. From the promenade along the Danube we contemplate the Greinburg Castle (Schloss Greinburg), but it is recommended to take the stairs of the Schloßgasse street and from there see the views of Grein and the Danube.
