Day 3 Cahors - Rocamadour - Souillac - Calviac (100 Km.)
Cahors: Nestled in a meander of Lot, which is dominated by rocky hills, Cahors, gala-Roman city, keeps intact the last traces of its rich and prestigious monuments: the bridge Valentré, carved doors, the Saint Etienne Cathedral, the Gallo-Roman baths . By 1345 the existing walls were reinforced, a new defensive barrier was done in the north, closing the river. Three bridges flank wall.
Cahors - Valentré bridge
The oldest was "le vieux pont" (Old Bridge) with its five defensive towers, ensuring links north and south, was later supplemented by "le Pont Neuf" (New Bridge) in 1291 and finally to the West the bridge Valentré. The latter has 3 fortified towers and six arches preceded by sharp peaks, such as medieval architecture and unique defense preserved fortified bridge in France. Cahors is also famous for its wineries and its wines.
(in 61 Km.) Rocamadour: When we were on the road approaching we could see as Rocamadour was located on a cliff in an overlay of brown roofs, houses and churches. At the top of the cliff was the castle at 150 meters tall. Highlight its seven chapels that make up the shrine to Notre Dame from the High Middle Ages. In the shelter under a rock in the middle of the cliff, a chapel was built to house a mysterious Black virgin.
Around the esplanade, in the hollow of the rock, the sanctuaries form a city. A single street crosses the medieval city, marked by fortified gates. From the twelfth century, many pilgrims come to worship and pray at Notre Dame of Rocamadour, black virgin, which is in the chapel of Notre Dame. Formerly kneeling pilgrims climbed the Grand Staircase, with two hundred steps, as a symbol of penitence.
(in 22 Km.) Souillac: Highligths its magnificent abbey church of Santa Maria (12th century) with its set of historian capitals. In front of the abbey is the museum of automata, one of the most important museums in automata, mechanical toys and animated scenes. Strolling through the streets to the aquare of Toiles de Bénéton with a tower of the fifteenth century.
(in 17 Km.) Calviac: We will sleep in the country house of "les Gites d´Aloe", which will be our base of operations for the next two days.
