Day 2 La Maddalena (7 Km)

Sardinia

(in 7 Km) After crossing again the bridge Passo della Moneta we returned again to the island of La Maddalena. It is the largest island in the archipelago, and it has also the largest town: La Maddalena. The other six islands, in order of size, are: Caprera, Spargi, Santo Stefano, Santa Maria island, Budelli (famous for its Pink beach) and Razzoli. We continue driving around the island through the circular road (Via Independenza).

Our first stop will be at the Cala Spalmatore, the most popular beach on the island because it is quite protected from the wind by two mounds of pink granite and because has enough services (deckchairs, restaurant, etc..). Its shallow waters are blue-green hue and has a fine golden sand. In just two kilometers, reaching the northeastern end of the island, we reached Cala Lunga, located in the resort town of Porto Massimo. Noted for its small tourist port and the contrast of colors offered by its water, sand and vegetation background.

We crossed the north of the island, from the east side to the west side, through the SP91 road and just in another two kilometers we reached the Spiaggia Monte d´arena. It is located in a bay wider than the previous ones in which there are several coves and some piers. It is a long sandy beach surrounded by thick rock formations splashed with vegetation. It owes its name to the impressive high sand dune overlooking the place.

We continue along the SP91 road in south direction, ascending the hill 146 meters high that overlooks the island. From the top you can see at your feet the town of La Maddalena, its port, the neighboring islands and the Emerald Coast. We descend the SP114 road with the intention of seeing Cala Francese, but, as there is little time for the hour that the ferry back, we did not have time to visit it. This cove is notable for its abandoned granite quarry.
