Day 2 Picherande - Lake Pavin - Picherande (24 Km.)
(in 12 Km.) Lake Pavin: The weather forecast predicted rain. As after breakfast it was not raining, we take advantage to go to nearby Lake Pavin. Once at the lake, we were reported that in the upper area there was the "summer party". We parked in a parking enabled for the occasion and we walked through the exhibition in which we could saw (and touch) cows, sheep, horses, etc. There´s also live music, livestock shows, exhibition of tractors and farm tools, dances, country restaurant, etc..
We moved away from the hustle and began the path around the lake. Being parked on top (next to the road up the left side of the lake), we decided to start the route, following the direction of clockwise. It takes about an hour to walk the path around the lake. The first section slopes gently from the highest point (with stunning views) until the water level. The second section continues at the level water until the restaurant (where you can rent pedalos, canoes or boats to navigate the lake) and I climbed the last stretch along the paved road to where we left the car, the parking of Fraux.
Lake Pavin, located 1,197 meters above sea level, is located inside an old crater. Besides the beauty of the lake surrounded by lush forest, this has a feature that makes it special and being studied by scientists: The lake has a depth of 90 meters, but the first 60 meters are freshwater (inhabited by trout that can be caught buying the appropriate license). In contrast, the 30 deeper meters are acid water and by the difference density it is not mixed with the fresh water.
Gîte at Picherande
If you want, from the path that goes around the lake you can take the path that climbs up the adjacent Puy de Montchal (1.407m.). We read somewhere that an old legend said that if you throw a stone into the lake occurred terrible storms. The childs threw some stone and fortunately there was no storm, but in the evening we had a terrible downpour. Because the wheather was not good, we went to the gîte for lunch and in the afternoon try visiting Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise, but once there we came back due to heavy rain.
Gîte at Picherande
(in 12 Km.) Picherande: As the weather was not good, we spent the afternoon at the gîte. It is a home for up to 23 guests in 4 bedrooms and 4 garrets. Best of the house is the garden where the children could play and the spacious dining area with two large tables, a fireplace that we lit almost every day and a football table that became the main distraction for the kids while we preparing dinner.
