Day 3 Picherande - Entraigues - Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise - Chaudefour valley - Picherande (68 Km.)
(in 14 Km.) Egliseneuve d´Entraigues: As the sky was overcast, we decided to visit a couple of nearby waterfalls before it rained. We drove to the outskirts of Egliseneuve d´Entraigues and left the car in the parking lot of the Lac d´Entraigues . It is an artificial lake where you can fish and swim. We take the path that descends to the right of the lake and in less than ten minutes we reached the cascade d´Entraigues.
Cascade d´Entraigues (Entraigues waterfall)
The cascade d´Entraigues is formed by a jump of 18 meters high and is embedded in a valley and surrounded by lush ferns and beech. We returned to the car park and take the path on the other side of the lake to go down to the Cascade du Bois de Chaux. It takes only about 5 minutes to get to the waterfall. There is also a small path leading to the top of the waterfall.

(in 16 Km.) Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise: In this town highlights the medieval Old Town (XV and XVI). As the distances are short, we make a nice walk through the cobblestone streets, until the rain forced us to shelter us in one of the many restaurants, where we could enjoy one of the typical dishes of the region, the truffade, cooked with potato, bacon and fresh tomme cheese of Cantal. After lunch we started the visit by the gate of the wall and the clock tower (Belfry).
We descend through their streets (which highlights the rue des Boucheries) and squares until the ski museum, located in a house called of the queen Margot. They are very nice small squares decorated with stone fountains in its center. At the bottom we visited the church of Saint-André, Romanesque and Gothic style, built in the early twelfth century. The choir dates from 1555 and features the image of the Black Virgin of Notre-Dame de Vassivière. Other interesting buildings are the house of the consuls, the mansion of Sainte-Marie des Remparts and the castle of Bailli.
(in 11 Km.) Chaudefour valley: We left the car in the parking lot that is on the edge of the D36 road just off the "maison de la réserve naturelle". The tour starts by a discovered path that advances near the woods. After 600 meters up on the left we find a small path up that leads to the waterfall Pérouse. A little later we stop at the left of the bridge that crosses the river, near the source of "Sainte Anne". It is a source of ferruginous and slightly gas water. There is a panel explaining the formation of the source, etc.

The path running through the valley is very easy. We continue our ascent a little more until a orientation table that shows the Chaudefour Valley. The end of the valley is one hour away. From this point begins the path to the ridge leading to Puy de Sancy. The valley offers a nice view of the ridges, rocks of curious shapes created by erosion and the volcanic peaks.
At this point the rain started and clouds hid the views of the peaks, which is why we decided to return.
(in 27 Km.) Picherande: We come back to the gîte.
