Day 5 La Fortuna - Arenal Volcano National Park - La Fortuna (64 Km.)
(in 15 Km.) Arenal Volcano National Park: The park´s main attraction is the Arenal Volcano with 1,633 m. For a long time it was considered extinct until 1968, when it made a strong and sudden eruption and destroyed an entire village. After a calm period, the volcano returned to its activity in 1981 and since then has been active. On well-marked trails you can reach an old lava flow. Around the volcano there is almost no vegetation, however, the park, with its extension of 4.000 hectares of primary forest, still protects the Cordillera de Tilarán
Since different paths of the park views over the lake Arenal are offered. It is an artificial lake formed by a dam and with an area of about 80 square kilometers is the largest lake in Costa Rica. The hydropower produced supplies much of the country. In the parts where there is not much water you can see a variety of waterfowl. Lake Arenal is famous around the world for its Windsurfing (due to the constant winds) and fishing.
Arenal Volcano National Park - Arenal volcano
During the day, the most interesting is to visit the park walking the trails of the volcano, for observing the different lava flows and craters profile, but above all hear the roar of the volcano or the sporadic explosions or emissions. The night attractive, if the night is clear, is to see the glowing lava flow of this active volcano down its slopes, in addition to observing the starry sky. The spectacular nature of this event will depend on the intensity of the volcano at the time of the visit. Another attraction of the area is the extinct volcano Cerro Chato located right next to the Arenal

The hiking trails also allow you to enjoy the fauna and flora of the park. The park has a varied flora and fauna. Among its species are laurel, figs, different species of palms, heliconias, orchids, ferns and bromeliads. On our visit we were lucky to see many species of butterflies, reptiles such as lizards and a snake, raccoons and white-faced monkeys. But when most enjoyed it was when we found a group of howler monkeys eating on top of some trees. This park is also a paradise for birdwatchers.

(in 20 Km.) La Fortuna waterfall: This is about 5 kilometers south of La Fortuna. The water of this waterfall falls from a height of about 70 meters to a beautiful natural pool where you can swim. The descent is a long, steep, narrow staircase then you have to go back up, but it is worth making the effort. This tour is also very popular to do it on horseback from La Fortuna.

(in 17 Km.) Tabacon hot springs resort: After a day of excursions we decided to engage in more relaxing activities. At the bottom of the volcano, near the entrance to the National Park, are the Tabacon Hot Springs. In the midst of beautiful tropical gardens flows the Tabacon River, heated by volcanic activity and rich in sulfur. The river flows through several pools and waterfalls, from where you can appreciate with any luck some of the eruptions of the volcano. Each of the pools is at a different temperature. In addition some of the pools have bars where you can have a drink.
