Day 13 San José - La Paz Waterfall Gardens - Liberia (290 Km.)
We left again from San Jose towards the gardens and waterfalls of La Paz. We were wrong and went the way of Alajuela and Fraijanes, instead of going for Heredia and Barba. We rejoined the correct road in the junction of Varablanca, place from which were only 5 kilometers to the gardens.

(in 51 Km.) Waterfallgardens: La Paz Waterfall Gardens or Waterfall Gardens are located at an altitude ranging from 1320 meters to 1540 meters, next to a river coming down the volcano Poas and ending with a series of four waterfalls, the last of which is the famous waterfall of La Paz. We started visiting the park for its butterfly observatory, the largest in the world, with an area of 1630 square meters and a height of 15 meters. Here we could photograph, among others, the enormous common blue butterfly (Peleides Blue Morpho). We also found very interesting the building where they have the butterfly cocoons, where if you are lucky you can see the process of birth of butterflies.

We continue down through the park to the Hummingbird Garden, where you can stroll under the very rapid flight of these birds. In the garden there are a number of nests where they leave their food and hummingbirds come to her unafraid of people, which allows us to appreciate up close to these animals. Right next we walked through the garden of the "House of Orchids", where various species of this flower are grown.

We arrived at the bank of the river from which we see the first of the waterfalls, the cascade Templo (Temple). From this point we join the path of the falls, the biggest attraction of the park. It Starts with a suspended metal ladder, taking a path along the vertical cliff face of the waterfall "Magia Blanca" (white magic), the largest and most powerful falls, halfway down the trail, and suspended, there is a platform that allows you to see the waterfall just a few meters.

The route continues with two balconies that allow photographing the waterfalls. Continuing downstream reaches three balconies located in the gorge created by the confluence of the river "La Paz Great" and the river "La Paz". From these balconies you can see all three waterfalls "Encantada" (Enchanted), "Escondida" (Hidden) and "La Paz" (Peace), the most famous waterfall in Costarica. Finally you reach the end of the trail, right next to the road bridge across the river "La Paz". From this point there is a shuttle to take us back to the park entrance where we left the car.
(in 98 Km.) La Fortuna: We continue towards Liberia passing again by the Arenal volcano. This time the clouds allowed us to see the summit cleared. We gone along Lake Arenal through a rough road that leads to Tilarán. During the tour we met a group of coatis crossing the road.

(in 141 Km.) Liberia: We reached the most important city of the northwest of the country, located in the strategic crossroads of inter-American and the main road to the Nicoya Peninsula. It is a strategic place to start visiting the beaches of the peninsula and the nearby national parks of Rincon de la Vieja and Santa Rosa.
