Day 15 Liberia - Monteverde - San José (245 Km.)

Costa Rica

(in 75 Km.) Monteverde: Monteverde is in the Tilaran Mountain Range, on the Continental Divide in Costa Rica. The climatic and geographical conditions that result from this phenomenon, are the basis for the huge variety of species and the particular vegetation. The Monteverde region is one of the protected areas most famous in the New World tropics. So far we have identified 400 different species of birds, 490 species of butterflies and 100 species of mammals, some endangered. The typical vegetation are tree ferns and trees covered by epiphytes and moss. The average rainfall in this area is about 3000 mm.

The starting point for all the attractions of this area is the small town of Santa Elena, which is located between Reserves of Monteverde and Santa Elena. Its origin is due to a group of pacifist Quakers from the United States, which settled in this region at the end of the Second World War. All major hotels are in town or on the way to the Monteverde Reserve. Tourist attractions are the Monteverde Biological Reserve, Biological Reserve Santa Elena, the butterfly garden, the serpentarium of Santa Elena, the Skywalk and Skytrek (secured cables between large trees through which you glide through pulleys secured by a special harness).

Of all these attractions we choosed the Skywalk, a tour that combines trails, suspension bridges and observation platforms in the forest, which allow to explore the treetops in an easy and safe way. The tour includes 2500 meters of trails and six bridges in total, the longest of them with a length of 200 meters, and heights above the canopy of trees to appreciate the richness and diversity of flora and fauna.

(in 170 Km.) San Jose: We leaved Monteverde driving down by the road that leads to Rancho Grande (we had entered by Las Juntas). The views from this road were beautiful, but we must endure its approximately 35 kilometers of unpaved road. Once we got to San Jose we perform the last purchases and prepare our bags for the flight back home.
