Day 11 Tortuguero N.P. (0 Km.)

Costa Rica

The second of the three days of the trip to Tortuguero we wake up very early to go to visit the National Park canals. We choose this time to see the animals when the channels are not yet crowded with tourists. The first thing we do is go get the ticket to the park office, which entitles us to navigate through the secondary channels located inside the park.

The wild landscape of canals houses waterfowl, toucans, parrots, sloths and many more. Among the different animals that we saw in the branches of trees highlight a green iguana, a family of howler monkeys and a crocodile. The fauna is rich and diverse. Among the most prominent are the tapir, jaguar, ocelot, peccary, howler monkeys, white-faced monkey, red or spider monkey,, the tepescuinte, coati, racoon, otters, tayra, the fishing bat that is one of the largest in the country and it feeds on fish they catch with his strong legs and claws when hovers over the water surface.

Other curious frog species are Smoky jungle frog and the reticulated glass frog whose internal organs are visible through its transparent skin. The park is also the habitat of species of terrestrial turtles, the manatee, alligator, large variety of crustaceans and some 52 species of freshwater fish including Gaspar fish. The navigation by the channel was like being on safari. We all wanted to be the first to discover a hidden animal between the branches.

After the tour through the canals, we return to the hotel for breakfast and rest a while. By midmorning we make an excursion by the trails near the hotel that allow delve into the jungle to see some animals more closely. Some who we could look more closely than we want are mosquitoes. It is mandatory to have put repellent to avoid being riddled with bites and wellies to walk through the mud covering the paths. Another animal we got to see was the famous red poisonous frog or toad, whose skin is toxic.

Another excursion that can be done in the park is the ascent to the highest "peak" of the National Park, Cerro Tortuguero (which according to biological studies is a dormant volcano), 119 meters high. Walk around this mountain allows to know their interesting forest and especially to see the panoramic views over the canals, the sea and the forest of the National Park.
